In 2019 it was announced that the Integrated Service Digital Network (ISDN) and Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) would be switched off in December 2025. Forward-thinking businesses are now starting to make their contingency plans.
PSTN is what many call a standard telephone line. It has been around since the 1800’s so has had an unbelievably long lifecycle! PSTN connects devices on 1 line from 1 device, like a landline telephone. It is also associated with the first dial up internet (the one where you heard the funny buzzing noise!).
The current systems, running on copper wire, have become increasingly expensive to maintain with the increased costs being passed onto end users. Alternative methods are cheaper, quicker and less volatile.
As of 2023 customers will no longer be able to purchase new lines, with the complete switch off taking place in 2025. It is expected there will be a rush to change between 2023 and 2025 with many businesses leaving it to the last minute.
